Ten years ago, believing that each child needs to start the school year feeling good about themselves and with all of the essentials necessary for educational success, we started a program called BACK2SCHOOL. So many of our families can barely meet the basic needs of shelter and food that things like school supplies and new clothing are luxuries that are outside their reach. The first year of the program we addressed the needs of 100 low-income children. In 2011 1100 children signed up for this program. Each child is provided a new backpack filled with educational supplies, at least one new outfit and new shoes to start their school year on an equal footing with their peers. A resource fair, immunizations, and dental and eye checks are also available on the day that all of the families come to the Valley View Recreation Center to get their Back2School bags.
